History

The Old Glasshouse is situated in the heart of Dudley, a market town located in the West Midlands with it’s very own Castle overlooking the town. It is one of the birthplaces of the Industrial Revolution and in the 13th Century became known for it’s coal mining and iron workings.

Other industries such as limestone mining, steel, engineering, metallurgy, glass cutting, textiles and leather working all came later in the 18th & 19th Century.

The Old Glasshouse restaurant and bar is built on a site of archaeological significance as it was once occupied by Dudley Flint Glassworks and constructed around the late 1700’s. It was demolished in the late 1800’s to make way for Dudley’s first fire station which was in use until around 1939. The site was then used for commercial use before being abandoned in the 1990’s.

In more recent years, the site which is in Dudley’s Conservation Area was developed with a project to bring it back to life for use as a restaurant and bar. The project made the most of the building’s location without compromising the site’s historical importance and a number of key features that were once lost through previous alterations were reinstated. These include the original fire station frontage and the rebuilding of hose drying tower. There are remains of the glassworks hidden in the foundations and parts of these remains can be viewed through a transparent panel in the restaurant floor.
